PM Modi Addresses 79th U.N. General Assembly, Advocates for Global Reform

Date:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived at the 79th U.N. General Assembly session on September 22, 2024, where he emphasized the necessity of reforms in global institutions to foster peace and development worldwide. Speaking at the Summit of the Future, Modi reiterated the urgent need for multilateralism and the modernization of the aging global architecture.

The two-day summit, which commenced on Sunday, serves as a precursor to the high-level meeting of world leaders set to take place at the United Nations compound in New York City. U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres had issued a call to action a year prior, highlighting the critical issues facing humanity and urging leaders to reaffirm their commitment to multilateralism—an essential component of the UN and various international organizations.

In a separate address to thousands of supporters in Long Island, New York, Modi highlighted his government’s achievements over the past decade while discussing plans for India’s future. He took the opportunity to praise the Indian diaspora, reinforcing their role as a vital link between India and the global community.

Additionally, the Prime Minister participated in the sixth summit-level meeting of the Quad group, which includes U.S. President Joe Biden, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. The meeting, held at Archmere Academy in Claymont, Delaware—Biden’s former school—resulted in the announcement of several key initiatives. These include the launch of a new coast guard exercise, the establishment of a logistics network, an expansion of maritime surveillance, and a project aimed at combating cervical cancer.

As world leaders convene in New York, the focus on global cooperation and reform is expected to be a significant theme, addressing the pressing challenges of the contemporary world and laying the groundwork for a more collaborative future.
