Thane to Roll Out 19 EV Charging Stations, Boosting Green Mobility Infrastructure

Date:

Mumbai/Thane, April 2026: The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) is set to roll out its first network of 19 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, marking a significant step toward sustainable urban transport and cleaner mobility.

First-Ever Citywide EV Charging Network

The project will establish 19 charging stations across key locations in Thane, with each site covering around 100 sq metres.

The initiative is aimed at supporting:

  • Electric cars, two-wheelers, and auto-rickshaws
  • Both local commuters and transit/tourist vehicles

Strategic Locations Across City

Most charging stations will be set up along:

  • Highways and major arterial roads
  • Key urban junctions and select suburban areas

This ensures easy accessibility and wide geographic coverage for EV users across the city.

Tech-Driven, Automated Charging System

The stations will be:

  • Largely automated and app-based
  • Designed to stop charging at around 90% capacity automatically
  • Capable of fully charging four-wheelers in 2–2.5 hours

The system will require minimal human intervention, enhancing efficiency and user convenience.

PPP Model, No Financial Burden on TMC

The project will be implemented under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, meaning:

  • Private operators will handle installation, operation, and maintenance
  • The civic body will not bear infrastructure costs
  • TMC will earn revenue based on electricity usage

Operations and Pricing

  • Stations will operate from 6 am to 10 pm, with scope for extended hours
  • Charging tariffs will be regulated as per government norms
  • No commercial advertising will be allowed at the sites

Backed by Global Technical Expertise

The initiative is being supported by the Rocky Mountain Institute (USA), which is assisting with technology and operational planning.

Boost to EV Adoption and Sustainability

Officials said the project will:

  • Reduce range anxiety for EV users
  • Encourage adoption of electric vehicles
  • Help cut urban pollution and carbon emissions

The success of the first phase will determine future expansion of the charging network.
