The Indian Air Force (IAF) has conducted a successful test of an emergency airstrip on the Purvanchal Expressway in Uttar Pradesh’s Lucknow–Sultanpur region, as part of a strategic exercise aimed at strengthening India’s wartime preparedness and rapid-response capabilities.
During the exercise, the IAF evaluated the expressway’s capability to function as an alternate runway for fighter jets and transport aircraft during emergencies or conflict situations. Officials confirmed that both take-off and landing operations were tested on the designated stretch of the expressway, which has been specially designed to support such military use.
The drill is part of a broader defence initiative under which select expressways and highways across India are being developed or modified to serve as emergency landing facilities for military aircraft. The Purvanchal Expressway is one of the key strategic routes included in this national preparedness plan.
According to defence sources, the exercise demonstrated the operational flexibility of the Indian Air Force, showing its ability to quickly switch between conventional airbases and highway-based landing strips if required during critical situations. The successful test also highlights the coordination between the IAF, state administration, and highway authorities in ensuring the expressway meets aviation-grade safety and structural standards.
The use of highways as airstrips significantly enhances India’s defence readiness, particularly in regions where rapid deployment of air assets may be required. Such infrastructure allows fighter aircraft to operate closer to potential zones of operation, reducing response time during emergencies.
The Purvanchal Expressway, a major infrastructure corridor in Uttar Pradesh, has earlier also been used for similar defence drills. These exercises typically involve temporary closure of sections of the highway and deployment of security personnel to ensure a safe operational environment for aircraft movements.
Officials added that the latest test is part of routine preparedness training and reflects the armed forces’ continued focus on strengthening multi-domain operational capability and infrastructure integration.
With this successful exercise, the Indian Air Force has once again demonstrated its ability to utilize dual-purpose infrastructure assets, reinforcing India’s growing emphasis on defence mobility, rapid deployment, and strategic flexibility.
