Mahayuti to Form BMC Mayor, Claims Ramdas Athawale Ahead of 2026 Civic Polls

Date:

Ahead of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections scheduled for 2026, Union Minister Ramdas Athawale on Tuesday expressed confidence that the Mahayuti alliance will secure a strong mandate and form the civic body’s leadership in Mumbai.

Speaking on the electoral prospects, Athawale said the alliance expects to win around 16 seats and gain substantial support across communities. Highlighting Mumbai’s demographic composition, he said, “In Mumbai city, the Marathi population is around 40 per cent, while the non-Marathi population is about 60 per cent. More than 50 per cent of the votes from Marathi people will go to us.”

Athawale further claimed that any alliance between the Congress party and the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi would weaken the opposition bloc. “If the Congress Party and Vanchit Bahujan come together, there will be a split in the Maha Vikas Aghadi’s votes, and this will benefit the Mahayuti candidates,” he said.

Praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the Union Minister said development has been the central theme of the government’s governance. “Prime Minister Modi has always emphasised development. During his tenure, the country has seen significant development,” Athawale remarked.

Expressing optimism about the political climate, he added, “Depending on the atmosphere, Mahayuti should come to power. The mayor here will be from Mahayuti.”

The BMC elections are expected to be a high-stakes political contest, with all major alliances gearing up to consolidate voter support in India’s financial capital.
