Govt Says No Urea Price Hike, Bag Size Cut to Encourage Balanced Use

Date:

The government has clarified that there is no proposal to increase urea prices, stating that the recent reduction in bag size is aimed at promoting balanced fertiliser use and improving soil health.

Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers Anupriya Patel shared the details in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.

Urea Bag Size Reduced as Policy Measure

The government said the reduction in bag size—from 50 kg to 45 kg, and in some cases to 40 kg—is intended to:

  • Curb excessive use of urea
  • Promote efficient fertiliser application
  • Encourage sustainable farming practices

The move is part of a broader strategy to improve soil health across the country.

No Additional Financial Burden on Farmers

The Centre подчеркed that the change in packaging does not impose any extra cost on farmers.

Current prices are:

  • ₹242 per 45 kg bag of neem-coated urea (excluding charges and taxes)
  • ₹254 per 40 kg bag of sulphur-coated urea (excluding levies and GST)

Focus on Sustainable Agriculture

The government said the initiative aligns with efforts to:

  • Promote judicious fertiliser use
  • Reduce dependency on excessive urea
  • Support long-term agricultural sustainability

Push for Soil Health and Efficient Farming

Officials emphasised that balanced fertiliser use is crucial for maintaining soil fertility and improving crop productivity, while preventing environmental damage caused by overuse.
