Maharashtra CM Orders Committee to Resolve Onion Growers’ Issues

Date:

Devendra Fadnavis has directed the formation of a high-level committee to propose long-term solutions for the challenges faced by onion farmers in Maharashtra.

The announcement was made during a meeting held in the Legislative Assembly in Mumbai. The committee will include Additional Chief Secretaries from the Agriculture and Finance Departments, along with the Secretary of the Marketing Department.

Meeting Planned with Centre to Boost Onion Exports

The Chief Minister stated that he will hold discussions with Piyush Goyal to address issues requiring central intervention.

Key topics of discussion will include curbing malpractices in the onion trade and increasing exports to stabilise market prices, which often fluctuate due to supply-demand imbalances.

Focus on Market Expansion Amid Rising Production

Devendra Fadnavis highlighted that onion production has risen significantly in recent years, creating a need for better market linkages and export opportunities for surplus produce.

He stressed that ensuring fair prices for farmers requires expanding both domestic and international market access.

Crop Diversification in Key Onion-Producing Districts

The committee has also been tasked with examining the feasibility of crop diversification in major onion-producing districts such as Nashik, Pune, Ahmednagar (Ahilya Nagar), and Solapur.

This move aims to reduce overdependence on onion cultivation and provide farmers with alternative income sources.

Long-Term Strategy for Farmer Stability

The formation of this committee marks a significant step toward creating a sustainable framework for onion farmers in Maharashtra.

By addressing pricing issues, improving export potential, and encouraging diversification, the state government aims to ensure long-term stability and better income prospects for farmers.
