Mumbai Metro Expands: First Phase of Two New Corridors to Open on April 7

Date:

Mumbai, April 7, 2026 – The city of Mumbai witnessed a major boost in urban transport today with the inauguration of the first operational sections of Metro Line 9 and Metro Line 2B, marking the partial launch of two new metro corridors aimed at easing commuter traffic across the city’s suburbs.

The inauguration, held earlier today, introduces approximately 10 kilometers of new metro connectivity, linking northern and eastern suburbs more efficiently with the broader Mumbai Metro network.

Metro Line 9 now connects Dahisar East to Kashigaon in the Mira-Bhayandar region, covering key stations including Dahisar, Pandurang Wadi, Miragaon, and Kashigaon. This line significantly improves transit options for residents in northern suburbs, providing a faster alternative to heavily congested roads like the Western Express Highway.

Metro Line 2B opens a 5.5 km stretch from Diamond Garden (Chembur) to Mandale, with stops at Shivaji Chowk, BSNL Metro, and Mankhurd. This east-west corridor enhances connectivity for eastern suburbs, linking Chembur and Harbour Line areas directly to the metro network.

Both lines had undergone thorough safety checks and trial operations prior to launch, ensuring seamless integration with existing metro routes. The expansion also enables smoother interchange options for commuters traveling toward central hubs such as Andheri and beyond.

Authorities expect that the new corridors will reduce travel time, decongest busy roads, and encourage greater adoption of public transport in Mumbai, contributing to a greener and more efficient urban mobility ecosystem.

The Mumbai Metro expansion continues to roll out in phases, with further sections of Line 9 and Line 2B scheduled to become operational in the coming months.

Commuters can expect improved frequency and connectivity as the metro network gradually extends, strengthening Mumbai’s position as a city with one of India’s most advanced urban transit systems.Mumbai, April 7, 2026 – The city of Mumbai witnessed a major boost in urban transport today with the inauguration of the first operational sections of Metro Line 9 and Metro Line 2B, marking the partial launch of two new metro corridors aimed at easing commuter traffic across the city’s suburbs.
