In a major infrastructure milestone for Uttar Pradesh, the 594-km-long Ganga Expressway is set to open for public on April 29, with authorities confirming that vehicles will be allowed to travel at a maximum cruising speed of 120 km per hour.
Once operational, the expressway will significantly reduce travel time between Meerut and Prayagraj from around 10–12 hours to nearly 6–7 hours, offering faster and smoother connectivity across western and eastern Uttar Pradesh.
The project, developed by the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA), is being positioned as one of the country’s most advanced access-controlled highways. Officials said the expressway has been designed as a six-lane corridor with provisions for future expansion to eight lanes, ensuring long-term capacity for rising traffic demand.
The expressway spans 594 km, linking Meerut in western UP to Prayagraj in the east, and passes through multiple districts including Hapur, Bulandshahr, Amroha, Budaun, Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Unnao, Raebareli, and Pratapgarh. It is expected to improve connectivity for hundreds of villages and key urban centres along the route.
Authorities confirmed that the project has been engineered with a strong focus on high-speed safety standards, including controlled entry and exit points, crash barriers, and modern traffic management systems to regulate movement and reduce accident risks.
The expressway features two major toll plazas at Meerut and Prayagraj, along with 19 ramp toll plazas to ensure smooth access across different sections. In addition, nine utility complexes have been developed along the route, equipped with fuel stations, food courts, rest areas, and sanitation facilities to support long-distance travellers.
A key highlight of the project includes major river crossings, such as a nearly 960-metre bridge over the Ganga River and a 720-metre bridge over the Ramganga, both built using advanced engineering techniques designed to withstand flooding and ensure structural durability.
The expressway has been constructed in multiple packages by leading infrastructure firms and has undergone extensive safety and quality checks ahead of its opening. Officials said preparations for the inauguration are complete, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi scheduled to inaugurate the project on April 29 in Hardoi district.
Once opened, the Ganga Expressway is expected to become a key economic corridor, improving logistics efficiency, reducing fuel consumption, and boosting trade connectivity between western and eastern Uttar Pradesh. It is also seen as a major step in strengthening the state’s growing expressway network and supporting faster regional development.
With its design speed of 120 kmph and modern infrastructure features, the expressway is set to redefine long-distance road travel in the state, offering faster, safer, and more efficient mobility for millions of commuters.
