Big Development Boost for Kashi: PM Modi to Launch 6,270 Crore Projects

Date:

Lucknow: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to arrive in Varanasi on April 28, where he will inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for projects valued at ₹6,270 crore, giving a fresh momentum to infrastructure development in his parliamentary constituency. The initiatives are expected to span key sectors such as urban planning, connectivity, public utilities, and civic infrastructure, with the goal of further modernising the historic city.

According to official sources, the projects will be formally unveiled during the Prime Minister’s visit to Kashi, where he is also likely to interact with local stakeholders and review ongoing development efforts in eastern Uttar Pradesh. The ₹6,270 crore investment package forms part of a broader strategy to continuously upgrade Varanasi’s infrastructure and enhance living standards through sustained government funding over the years.

The list of projects includes both inauguration of completed works and foundation laying for new initiatives, covering key areas such as road networks, urban transport, water supply systems, sanitation, and public facilities. Authorities believe these measures will help ease traffic congestion, improve mobility, and strengthen basic infrastructure in both urban and surrounding semi-urban areas.

Varanasi, regarded as one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities, has undergone visible transformation under multiple government schemes, including smart city programmes and heritage conservation efforts. The upcoming projects are expected to further accelerate this development, especially in areas related to tourism infrastructure and city modernisation.

A large share of the ₹6,270 crore outlay will be directed toward enhancing transport infrastructure and urban connectivity, including improved roads, better public transport, and stronger last-mile connectivity. These upgrades aim to facilitate smoother movement in the city, which attracts a high number of visitors due to its religious and cultural importance.

At the same time, improvements in water supply and sewage systems are also planned, addressing persistent civic issues in expanding urban zones. These upgrades are expected to boost sanitation standards and support sustainable growth.

Officials have indicated that the projects align with the long-term vision of developing Varanasi into a modern, well-connected, and globally recognised heritage city, ensuring that infrastructure growth goes hand in hand with preservation of its cultural identity.

Since 2014, Varanasi has seen consistent infrastructure investment, with multiple development phases already completed. The upcoming ₹6,270 crore package will add to this ongoing transformation, reinforcing efforts to strengthen infrastructure in emerging urban centres.

Over time, the city has witnessed upgrades in roads, redevelopment of ghats, improved public amenities, and expansion of tourism-related facilities. The Prime Minister’s upcoming visit is expected to build on this progress with new projects focused on long-term urban growth.

The planned initiatives are seen as a crucial step in shaping Varanasi into a dynamic urban and cultural hub, blending heritage with modern development. With investments spread across multiple sectors, the projects are also expected to create employment, improve public services, and enhance overall quality of life.

Preparations for the visit are underway, with authorities finalising project details and arrangements. The announcement is being viewed as another significant milestone in the ongoing development journey of one of India’s most prominent cultural and political cities.
