Metro Line 6 Progresses as 42m Girder Launched Over Active Railway Tracks in Mumbai

Mumbai’s Metro expansion has achieved a key engineering milestone as the Mumbai Metro Line 6 project successfully launched a major steel girder over active Western Railway tracks without disrupting train operations, marking another step forward in improving the city’s east–west connectivity.

The critical operation was carried out between Ram Mandir and Jogeshwari stations, where engineers installed a 42-metre-long steel composite girder weighing nearly 169 tonnes over live railway lines. The work was completed during a carefully planned overnight block, ensuring that regular suburban train services on the Western Railway were not affected.

Officials said the operation was one of the most technically challenging stages of the project due to the presence of continuous train movement, limited working space, and strict time constraints. Despite these challenges, the girder was successfully positioned within a limited maintenance window, demonstrating high-level coordination between construction agencies and railway authorities.

This achievement is part of the larger Mumbai Metro Line 6 corridor, a 15.31-km elevated route connecting Swami Samarth Nagar (Lokhandwala) to Vikhroli, which is designed to significantly improve east–west travel across Mumbai. The corridor includes multiple key stations and is expected to reduce congestion on major roadways such as the Western and Eastern Express Highways.

The latest girder launch is particularly significant because it involves crossing over one of Mumbai’s busiest suburban railway corridors. Engineers used advanced launching techniques, precision lifting systems, and time-bound execution plans to ensure the structure was placed safely above active tracks without any disruption to rail traffic.

According to project officials, nearly 87–88% of civil work on the Metro Line 6 corridor has already been completed, while remaining sections—particularly those crossing railway lines and depot-related infrastructure—are progressing at a fast pace. Authorities are also exploring the possibility of phased commissioning of the line, allowing partial operations in completed sections before full project completion.

The Metro Line 6 project has seen several similar engineering feats in recent months, including multiple steel girder launches over congested railway and road sections in the Jogeshwari area, where space constraints and active traffic make construction particularly complex. These operations often require overnight railway blocks and detailed coordination with multiple agencies.

Officials highlighted that such infrastructure work is essential for building elevated metro corridors in dense urban environments like Mumbai, where construction must be carried out above functioning rail and road networks without causing public disruption. The successful completion of this girder installation is being seen as a major step toward completing the corridor’s most critical structural segments.

Once operational, Metro Line 6 is expected to provide a fast, reliable, and congestion-free east–west transit option, significantly reducing travel time between key residential and commercial zones. It will also help ease pressure on existing road and rail networks, which are already operating at near capacity.
