Mumbai, Maharashtra — Shiv Sena leader Shaina NC has welcomed MHADA’s move to issue a redevelopment tender for the Kamathipura area in South Mumbai, calling it a “historic redevelopment effort” that extends far beyond its association with the red-light district.
“Kamathipura’s red-light area is only a small part of this redevelopment plan,” Shaina NC clarified. “If you look at the larger picture, there is Bhendi Bazaar, where the Saifee Burhani Upliftment Trust is working on 16.5 acres.”
She highlighted the scale of Kamathipura, which includes 15 lanes with 943 cessed buildings, 349 non-cessed buildings, 14 religious places, and 2 BMC-run schools. Stressing the importance of planned urban renewal, she added, “Redevelopment must be done in an integrated manner under Regulation 339 of the Development Control and Promotion Regulations (DCPR) 2034, which applies across Mumbai.”
MHADA’s decision to pursue cluster redevelopment of Kamathipura under this regulation aims to modernize aging infrastructure while preserving the cultural and residential fabric of the area.
“This is a historic redevelopment effort for the Kamathipura area,” Shaina NC concluded, reinforcing the vision of inclusive and structured urban development in one of Mumbai’s oldest neighborhoods.
