Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi said that the exchange of Green Ammonia Purchase Agreements (GAPAs) and Supply Agreements marks a significant step toward strengthening India’s energy security, especially at a time when the world is facing growing uncertainties.
Key Agreements Under National Green Hydrogen Mission
The minister was addressing an event at Atal Akshay Urja Bhawan under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, focused on green ammonia agreements for the fertilizer sector. The event was also attended by Union Minister J. P. Nadda.
Joshi highlighted that under the leadership of Narendra Modi, India has demonstrated that economic growth and climate action can progress simultaneously at scale and speed.
Boost to Renewable Energy and 2030 Targets
He noted that India is among the fastest-growing renewable energy markets globally and is on track to achieve 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030.
The 10-year agreements signed between industry players, the Solar Energy Corporation of India, and fertilizer companies are expected to:
- Ensure long-term demand certainty
- Enable financial closure of projects
- Drive large-scale investments in green ammonia production
Reducing Import Dependence, Saving Forex
The minister emphasized that energy security is closely linked to national security. Replacing imported grey ammonia with green ammonia will:
- Strengthen domestic production capacity
- Build resilient supply chains
- Save nearly $2.5 billion in foreign exchange over 10 years
Focus on Hard-to-Abate Sectors
India’s next phase of energy transition will target sectors that are difficult to decarbonize, including:
- Fertilizers
- Refineries
- Steel
- Transport
Green hydrogen and its derivatives, especially green ammonia, will play a crucial role in reducing emissions in these industries.
Driving Industrial Growth and Job Creation
Joshi said green ammonia will not only act as a clean feedstock but also:
- Support creation of a new industrial ecosystem
- Generate employment opportunities
- Attract investments into the clean energy sector
Historic Step for Fertilizer Sector: J.P. Nadda
Union Minister J. P. Nadda described the initiative as a historic and visionary step toward building a robust green ammonia ecosystem in India. He said the agreements mark the beginning of operationalizing green ammonia in the fertilizer sector and reflect the government’s commitment to sustainable and affordable solutions.
₹19,744 Crore Mission to Make India a Global Hub
The Government of India is implementing the National Green Hydrogen Mission with a budget outlay of ₹19,744 crore. The mission aims to:
- Position India as a global hub for green hydrogen production, usage, and exports
- Achieve at least 5 million metric tonnes (MMT) annual green hydrogen production by 2030
- Enhance energy security and reduce carbon emissions
