Mumbai: In an effort to address rising traffic congestion and improve infrastructure efficiency, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has announced that the state government will appoint a professional consultant for systematic road planning across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
The government has instructed the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority to onboard an expert agency that will prepare a comprehensive road development blueprint. The consultant will identify bottlenecks, recommend road widening projects, and propose new connectivity corridors such as ring roads to ensure smoother traffic movement.
Speaking at a real estate exhibition organised by MCHI-CREDAI in the Kalyan-Dombivli region, Shinde emphasized that the initiative is aimed at reducing travel time and enhancing daily commuting for residents. He noted that better planning will not only improve mobility but also contribute to a more balanced urban lifestyle.
During the event, developers raised concerns regarding the redevelopment of old and dilapidated buildings in Kalyan-Dombivli. They urged the government to increase the Floor Space Index (FSI) in line with Mumbai and Thane, arguing that higher FSI would make redevelopment projects more financially viable.
Responding to these concerns, Shinde assured that the state government will soon hold a meeting to address redevelopment challenges. He also revealed plans for a new connector that will link Kalyan directly to the Samruddhi Mahamarg, which is expected to significantly improve regional connectivity and ease traffic pressure.
The move is part of the Maharashtra government’s broader strategy to modernise urban infrastructure and tackle long-standing traffic issues in one of India’s busiest metropolitan regions.
