Mumbai Rains Disrupt Normal Life; Orange Alert Issued, Schools Shut and Local Trains Delayed

Date:

Normal life in Mumbai has been severely disrupted by incessant heavy rainfall. On Tuesday morning, the city remained overcast with strong winds blowing. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for heavy rain and gusty winds, keeping an ‘Orange Alert’ in effect for Mumbai until Wednesday. According to the department, intermittent rain is expected across the city and suburbs, with the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall in some areas.

As a precautionary measure due to the severe weather conditions, all government, private, and municipal schools and colleges in Mumbai remained closed on Tuesday. Continuous rainfall had brought normal life to a near-standstill in Mumbai and surrounding areas on Monday. Several major roads in the city were inundated, disrupting traffic. Additionally, incidents of uprooted trees and collapsing walls and hoardings were reported from various locations.

Severe waterlogging persisted in the Vasai-Virar region of Palghar district from Monday morning. However, the situation improved slightly as water levels began to recede following a drop in rainfall intensity in the evening. Meanwhile, Vihar Lake—one of the seven lakes supplying drinking water to Mumbai—overflowed around 9 PM on Tuesday.

Water levels rose rapidly due to continuous heavy rainfall in the lake’s catchment area. With a usable water storage capacity of approximately 27.698 billion litres, the lake supplies about 90 million litres of water daily. Last year, it had overflowed on August 18. Built in 1859, Vihar Lake is one of Mumbai’s smallest water supply lakes. When the lake overflows, the excess water is discharged into the Mithi River.

Rail services were also affected by the rain. According to Western Railway, the first local train from Virar to Churchgate departed at 3:57 AM on Tuesday. However, passengers reported that Western Railway local trains were running with an average delay of 20 to 25 minutes, while Central Railway services were delayed by 10 to 15 minutes. Meanwhile, Mumbai Metro and ‘BEST’ bus services continued to operate normally.

According to Western Railway, Train No. 20908 Bhuj-Dadar Sayajinagari Express (scheduled for July 7, 2026) has been short-terminated at Gandhidham station; it will not operate between Gandhidham and Dadar. Additionally, several trains scheduled for July 8, 2026, have been fully cancelled.

These include the 20907 Dadar-Bhuj Sayajinagari Express, 12934 Ahmedabad-Bandra Terminus Karnavati Express, 12933 Bandra Terminus-Ahmedabad Karnavati Express, 12932 Ahmedabad-Mumbai Central AC Double Decker Express, 12931 Mumbai Central-Ahmedabad AC Double Decker Express, 82902 Ahmedabad–Mumbai Central Tejas Express, 82901 Mumbai Central–Ahmedabad Tejas Express, 22962 Ahmedabad–Mumbai Central Vande Bharat Express, and 22961 Mumbai Central–Ahmedabad Vande Bharat Express.

Western Railway has urged passengers to check the latest status of their trains via NTES or Rail Madad (139) before commencing their journey. The railway has also expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to passengers. The administration has appealed to citizens to avoid unnecessary travel, heed weather department warnings, and stay away from waterlogged areas.

Meanwhile, Pune Mayor Manjusha Nagpure stated, “Heavy rainfall is still occurring in the dam’s catchment area. Therefore, I urge all citizens living along the riverbanks to remain alert. The municipal corporation is fully prepared; officials and staff have been deployed at various locations along the river, and we are continuously monitoring the situation.”
