Mumbai Rail Projects Get Major Boost in Interim Budget

Date:

The Mumbai Urban Transport Projects (MUTP), a series of rail initiatives aimed at improving the city’s suburban network, received a substantial allocation of INR 1,600 crores in the interim budget presented by the Union Finance Minister on Monday. The MUTP is part of the INR 15,500 crore earmarked for Maharashtra by the Indian Railways, which is the highest among all states.

The MUTP, executed by the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC), covers several projects in various phases, including new rail lines, station upgrades, capacity augmentation, and procurement of new coaches. Some of the key projects under the MUTP are the Panvel-Karjat double line, the Virar-Dahanu quadrupling, the Airoli-Kalwa connector, and the Thane-Diva fifth and sixth lines.

The interim budget also allocated significant funds for the Western and Central Railways, which operate the suburban services in Mumbai. The Western Railway received INR 1,100 crore for speed enhancement, bridge restructuring, and customer amenities, while the Central Railway got INR 1,000 crore for the same purposes.

The National High Speed Rail Corporation (NHSRC), which is implementing India’s first bullet train corridor between Mumbai and Ahmedabad, was granted INR 25,000 crore in the interim budget. The 508-km project, which is expected to be completed by 2028, will reduce the travel time between the two cities from seven hours to two hours. The project is being partly funded by a loan from Japan.

The interim budget has shown a strong commitment to advancing the rail infrastructure in the Mumbai region, which is one of the most congested and densely populated urban areas in the world. The improved rail connectivity and mobility will benefit millions of commuters and boost the economic growth of the region.
