Mumbai to Add Two New Rail Lines: Land Procurement Begins

Date:

MUMBAI – The Maharashtra state government has initiated the process to acquire land for the construction of two additional rail lines on the Parel-Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) stretch. This development is part of a ₹1,337-crore project aimed at segregating suburban locals from long-distance trains.

The new 5th and 6th rail lines will span between Kurla and CSMT, enhancing the city’s rail infrastructure and easing the commute for millions of Mumbaikars. The state government is currently in the process of procuring over 1,263 square metres of land near the Masjid railway station for this purpose.

The addition of these two lines is expected to significantly reduce congestion on the existing lines, providing a smoother and more efficient travel experience for passengers. The segregation of local and long-distance trains will also improve the punctuality of services, a long-standing issue for the city’s rail network.

The project marks a significant step towards improving Mumbai’s public transport system, which is heavily reliant on its local train network. The new lines will not only enhance connectivity but also boost the city’s capacity to handle the growing demand for public transport.

The state government is committed to ensuring that the project is completed in a timely and efficient manner, with minimal disruption to the existing services. As Mumbai continues to grow and evolve, initiatives like these are crucial in ensuring that the city’s public transport infrastructure keeps pace with its development.
