In a recent interview with the Lokmat Media Group, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his deep respect for Shiv Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray and his contributions to the nation. He emphasized that he has always maintained dignity and decorum with every member of Balasaheb’s family, irrespective of the political dynamics.
“Throughout his life, Balasaheb stood for politics that furthered national interest and was against appeasement politics,” said PM Modi. He added that he and his party are working to take Balasaheb’s legacy forward, acknowledging him as one of the most important and influential leaders in the history of India.
However, the Prime Minister expressed his pain over certain developments in the political sphere. He wondered aloud what Balasaheb Thackeray would have thought of the current political climate, particularly those who “abuse Veer Savarkar and celebrate Aurangzeb” and form alliances with parties that disrespect “Sanatana Dharma”.
“Mumbai and its people were so close to Balasaheb’s heart,” PM Modi reflected. He questioned how Balasaheb would have reacted to seeing those convicted in the Mumbai bomb blasts being used for campaigning, or to people aligning with those who openly express their desire to destroy Sanatan Dharma.
The Prime Minister ended his interview with a poignant question: “Can anyone claim to be upholding the legacy of Balasaheb after doing such things?” His words serve as a reminder of the ideological differences that continue to shape the political landscape of India.
