In a major boost for rail travel, the Indian Railways will soon offer a significantly shorter journey between Mumbai and Indore, thanks to a new railway line project approved by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs. The project, announced on Monday, is set to revolutionize connectivity between the two cities by providing the “shortest rail connectivity” in this corridor.
The new railway line will be constructed between Indore and Manmad, with a total expenditure of Rs 18,036 crore. Spanning six districts across Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, the project will add 309 kilometers to the existing Indian Railways network and involve the establishment of 30 new railway stations. This development is expected to generate approximately 102 lakh man-days of direct employment during the construction phase.
This ambitious project is a key component of the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan for multi-modal connectivity, which aims to enhance infrastructure through integrated planning. By ensuring seamless connectivity, the project will facilitate the efficient movement of people, goods, and services.
One of the notable benefits of the new railway line is its potential to improve access to the aspirational district of Barwani. It will also connect around 1,000 villages, benefiting a population of about 30 lakh people. The enhanced connectivity is anticipated to boost local development and provide greater access to essential services and opportunities.
The project is poised to have a positive impact on tourism as well. By offering a shorter route between the western and south-western regions of India and central India, the new line is expected to increase tourist traffic to key destinations in the Ujjain-Indore region. This includes the renowned Sri Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga Temple, which is a significant religious site.
In addition to boosting tourism, the new railway line will directly connect the Pithampur Auto Cluster—home to 90 large units and 700 small and medium industries—to the JNPT (Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust) and other state ports. This will enhance the movement of goods and bolster industrial growth in the region.
The new line will also facilitate the transportation of key commodities, including agricultural products, fertilizers, containers, iron ore, steel, cement, and petroleum products. The capacity augmentation is projected to result in an additional freight traffic of about 26 MTPA (Million Tonnes Per Annum), significantly enhancing the efficiency of goods distribution across the country.
Overall, this new railway project represents a major stride forward in improving India’s rail infrastructure, promising to streamline travel, stimulate economic growth, and support regional development.
