Shaina NC Slams Prada Over Kolhapuri Chappals, Calls for Recognition of Indian Artisans

Date:

Fashion designer and Shiv Sena leader Shaina NC has voiced strong criticism of global luxury brand Prada for failing to acknowledge the contribution of Indian artisans in popularizing the iconic Kolhapuri chappal. Her statement comes amid growing backlash over the brand selling a version of the traditional footwear for approximately ₹1.2 lakh (USD 1,500).

Speaking in Mumbai, Shaina NC said, “Luxury brand Prada has made India’s iconic Kolhapuri chappal extremely popular, but it’s important to give credit where it’s due—and that is to the Indian artisans who have been crafting these chappals for generations.”

She emphasized that while global recognition of Indian heritage is welcome, the true creators behind these designs—the skilled artisans of Maharashtra—must not be overlooked. “We must rally to make India and Kolhapuri chappals proud, but only if the artisan gets the credit. Otherwise, it’s a disservice to their talent,” she added.

Addressing the broader implications, Shaina NC raised concerns over international fashion houses using Indian designs without proper attribution. “The big question is: why do international designers like Prada not even mention ‘Make in India’ when profiting from Indian heritage?” she asked.

Her comments have sparked a renewed conversation around ethical fashion, cultural appropriation, and the need for fair credit and compensation for traditional Indian craftsmen in the global luxury marketplace.
