Ramdas Athawale Opposes Plan for Muslim-Only Township Near Mumbai

Date:

Mumbai: Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Ramdas Athawale has strongly opposed the proposed plan by certain builders to create a Muslim-only township near Mumbai, calling it both objectionable and illegal.

Athawale said this was the first time such a move had been announced in the country and stressed that it goes against the principle of communal harmony. “This does not mean opposition to Muslims, but neither can such a township be announced for Hindus or Muslims. Therefore, I also oppose it, as announcing such a township is illegal and wrong,” he stated.

He further pointed out that the Maharashtra government has already opposed the plan, and large sections of society are also voicing concerns. Athawale reiterated that India’s strength lies in unity and coexistence, and creating exclusive communities on the basis of religion would set a dangerous precedent.

The minister demanded legal action against the builders who announced the project, urging authorities to ensure that no such attempts are permitted in the future. “Legal action should be taken against them. This is our demand,” Athawale asserted, adding that housing projects must remain inclusive and open to all communities.
