BMC Cancels NOC Linked to 237 Fake Birth Certificates, Two Officials Suspended: Mayor Ritu Tawde

Date:

Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde on Monday said that decisive action has been initiated by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) after irregularities were found in the issuance of 237 birth certificates.

Addressing the media following a review meeting, Tawde stated that the No Objection Certificate (NOC) related to the certificates had been removed from the civic portal. She added that two officials have been suspended in connection with the matter and that a detailed investigation is currently underway.

The Mayor said she had directed senior officers to ensure that the 237 birth certificates in question are cancelled within a month. “If the birth certificates of 237 people are not cancelled within a month, I will bring your proposal in the House,” she said, signalling accountability at the administrative level.

Tawde further stated that the civic body is taking action against individuals who may have entered the city illegally and are allegedly misusing official documentation. She emphasised that strict verification mechanisms would be enforced to prevent similar irregularities in the future.

The development comes amid heightened scrutiny of documentation processes within civic bodies. Officials said internal audits and procedural reviews are being undertaken to strengthen transparency and compliance in certificate issuance systems.

The BMC has indicated that further action may follow depending on the outcome of the ongoing inquiry.
