Thane Metro Likely To Be Rerouted After Facing Backlash From The Residents

Date:

The proposed Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MahaMetro) internal metro project in Thane is likely to change its proposed route and station placement amid the strong protest by the local residents and housing societies. This shift may delay the urban transport planning in Maharashtra.

Local residents were protesting for weeks against the alignment modifications proposed under the ambitious Thane Internal Ring Metro project. This project is expected to be built on a 29-kilometre corridor and will ease congestion and improve the travelling experience in the fast-growing city.

Residents Force Authorities to Reconsider Metro Alignment

According to reports, citizens from areas such as Hiranandani Estate, Brahmand, and Waghbil raised concerns over the revised alignment, claiming the changes were introduced without adequate public consultation. Residents alleged that the modified route could increase traffic congestion, affect residential neighbourhoods, and disrupt schools, hospitals, and local infrastructure.

Facing mounting pressure, MahaMetro officials are now considering shifting a proposed station and revising parts of the corridor alignment in Thane. Authorities are also expected to conduct joint site inspections with resident representatives and local elected officials before finalising the revised plan.

Why the Thane Internal Metro Project Is Important

The Thane Internal Ring Metro is one of Maharashtra’s major urban mobility projects designed to reduce road congestion and improve public transport connectivity within Thane city. The metro line is expected to feature 22 stations across elevated and underground stretches and connect key areas including:

  • Thane Railway Station
  • Wagle Estate
  • Balkum
  • Manpada
  • Waghbil
  • Rabodi

The project is also planned to integrate with existing and upcoming Mumbai Metro corridors, including Metro Line 4 and Metro Line 5.

Urban planners believe the metro corridor could significantly reduce dependence on private vehicles and improve east-west connectivity in Thane, which continues to witness rapid population growth and worsening traffic congestion.

Main Concerns Raised by Citizens

Several residents’ groups and urban activists have questioned the revised alignment process, arguing that major infrastructure decisions should involve greater public participation.

Key concerns include:

  • Possible increase in local traffic congestion during construction
  • Loss of green spaces and road medians
  • Impact on residential buildings and schools
  • Safety concerns in densely populated areas
  • Lack of transparency regarding alignment changes

Experts have also warned that construction in crowded urban pockets and near older structures could create long-term logistical and structural challenges.

Public Consultation Becoming Crucial in Mega Projects

The Thane metro controversy highlights a growing trend across Indian cities where residents are demanding greater involvement in infrastructure planning. Experts say public resistance to large urban projects often emerges when communication gaps and sudden design changes affect local communities.

Transport analysts note that balancing infrastructure expansion with environmental sustainability and urban liveability is becoming increasingly important for metro rail projects nationwide.

What Happens Next?

MahaMetro officials are expected to review alternate route suggestions submitted by citizens and local representatives. A joint inspection and technical assessment may determine whether the proposed station relocation and route adjustments are feasible.

While the metro project remains a crucial part of Thane’s future transport network, the latest developments indicate that authorities may now adopt a more consultative approach before moving ahead with construction in sensitive residential zones.
