Trump Calls PM Modi a ‘Good Friend’, Says a Trade Deal Between India and the US Will Happen Soon

Date:

Describing Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “good friend,” US President Donald Trump stated that a trade agreement between the US and India could be reached soon. Addressing an event on coal and energy policy at the White House, Trump noted that trade talks between the two nations are progressing, despite his long-standing criticism of India’s tariff regime.

Responding to a question about reports suggesting the two countries are nearing a trade deal following Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s recent visit to India, Trump said, “Yes, we are working on this deal.” He added, “We will reach an agreement because I really like your Prime Minister. He is a good friend of mine. We get along very well, and we will strike a deal. Our relationship is excellent.”

During the event, Trump reiterated his long-standing grievance that India has imposed very high tariffs on American products. He remarked, “For years, India took advantage of the US. They charged us very high tariffs while offering almost nothing in return.”

Trump cited Harley-Davidson motorcycles as an example, noting that high import duties had previously made it difficult for American companies to operate in the Indian market. He said, “India used to impose tariffs of up to 200 percent on Harley-Davidson motorcycles, making it hard for the company to do business there. Eventually, Harley-Davidson had to set up its own plants in India.”

Trump highlighted the stark contrast between past trade arrangements and his administration’s current policies. He stated, “They used to levy heavy tariffs on our products while we charged them nothing. But now the situation is completely different, and we are generating good revenue from trade with India.”

Trump’s remarks come amidst growing optimism in Washington and New Delhi that negotiators from both nations are nearing a trade agreement that would facilitate easier market access and potentially resolve various tariff-related disputes. Trade has emerged as one of the most critical areas of the India-US strategic partnership. Both governments have consistently emphasized the need to further strengthen economic ties alongside cooperation in sectors such as defense, technology, energy, and critical supply chains.

Trump’s remarks also reflected his personal rapport with Prime Minister Modi—a bond he frequently highlights. During his first term, the two leaders participated in several major public events, including the “Howdy Modi” event in Houston and the “Namaste Trump” event in Ahmedabad.
