Mumbai: To further enhance stakeholder participation in India’s Coal Gasification Mission and accelerate industry involvement, the Ministry of Coal is organizing the third roadshow on the ‘Scheme for Promotion of Coal/Lignite Gasification Projects’ in Mumbai on June 18, 2026. Following the positive response to previous roadshows in New Delhi and Hyderabad, the Mumbai roadshow will bring together key industry stakeholders, investors, technology providers, policy experts, coal sector representatives, financial institutions, and state government officials. They will discuss emerging opportunities in coal gasification and support the nation’s vision for the cleaner and more sustainable use of coal resources.
Union Minister of Coal and Mines Shri G. Kishan Reddy will attend this event as the Chief Guest. Maharashtra Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis will be present as a Special Guest, while Minister of State for Coal and Mines Shri Satish Chandra Dubey will be the ‘Guest of Honour’. Secretary of the Ministry of Coal Shri Vikram Dev Dutt, Additional Secretary Shri Sanoj Kumar Jha, and other senior officials from the Ministry will also be present on the occasion.
Coal gasification is emerging as a key pillar of India’s strategy aimed at strengthening energy security, reducing reliance on critical imported feedstocks, promoting value addition to domestic coal resources, and fostering the growth of downstream industries. Coal gasification facilitates the production of various value-added products—such as methanol, urea, ammonium nitrate, synthetic natural gas, and other chemical feedstocks—by converting coal into synthesis gas (syngas). This opens up new avenues for industrial development and import substitution.
Recognizing the transformative potential of coal gasification, the government has approved an initiative worth ₹46,000 crore to promote surface coal/lignite gasification projects. The objective of this initiative is to accelerate the launch of coal gasification projects across the country, promote the use of domestic coal for essential industrial and chemical products, reduce import dependence for natural gas, methanol, ammonia, and other key raw materials, and strengthen India’s energy security while fostering industrial growth and economic self-reliance.
To ensure broad participation and transparency among all stakeholders during its implementation, the Ministry has made the ‘Request for Proposal’ (RFP) public and invited comments and suggestions from the concerned parties.
This roadshow demonstrates the Ministry’s resolve to transform India’s vast coal resources into a driving force for industrial innovation, energy security, and economic growth. By fostering partnerships, encouraging investment, and facilitating the adoption of advanced technologies, the Ministry is paving the way for a robust coal gasification ecosystem. This ecosystem will support the nation’s journey towards the vision of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-reliant India), energy self-reliance, and ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’ (Developed India 2047). (PIB)
