UK and India Strengthen Bilateral Ties with Focus on Trade and Strategic Cooperation

Date:

UK Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs David Lammy concluded a significant diplomatic visit to India, marking a pivotal moment in the evolving relationship between the two countries. Lammy’s visit, the first high-level engagement by the UK’s Labour government under Prime Minister Keir Starmer, aimed to reinforce and expand the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the UK and India.

During his meetings with Indian leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Lammy emphasized the importance of deepening economic cooperation and advancing shared strategic interests. Key among these was the bilateral Technology Security Initiative and the ongoing negotiations towards a Free Trade Agreement (FTA), seen as critical steps towards fostering greater economic integration and growth.

“I am pleased with the progress made in discussions to strengthen our economic ties and collaborate on crucial strategic initiatives,” Lammy remarked, highlighting the positive outcomes of his talks.

Lammy’s visit also underscored the strategic importance of aligning efforts on green technologies, economic security, and global stability. Both nations expressed their commitment to addressing shared challenges such as climate change and public health through collaborative efforts and innovative partnerships.

The visit coincided with efforts to highlight the significant role of the ‘Living Bridge’ – the Indian diaspora in the UK, which contributes significantly to bilateral relations through cultural exchange and economic contributions.

“The Indian diaspora is a cornerstone of our bilateral relationship, fostering deeper understanding and cooperation between our countries,” Lammy acknowledged, emphasizing the community’s vital role in promoting mutual understanding and prosperity.

In addition to governmental engagements, Lammy met with leaders from business and climate sectors to explore opportunities for joint ventures and initiatives aimed at sustainable development and resilience-building. His visit set the stage for enhanced collaboration in key sectors such as renewable energy, technology, and healthcare.

Looking ahead, Lammy expressed optimism about the future trajectory of UK-India relations, highlighting the shared commitment to a forward-looking partnership that leverages innovation and inclusivity for mutual benefit.

“As we navigate global challenges, our partnership with India remains crucial to achieving our shared goals of prosperity and security,” Lammy affirmed, signaling a strong commitment to deepening ties between the UK and India in the years to come.
