Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis Assures Security of Mumbai Jails for Tahawwur Rana After Extradition

Date:

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has responded confidently to concerns regarding the security of Mumbai’s jails in housing Tahawwur Rana, the Pakistani-origin Canadian national accused of involvement in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. When asked if Mumbai’s jails were secure enough to hold Rana following his potential extradition, Fadnavis assured that the state’s prisons could manage the security of high-profile detainees.

Fadnavis remarked, “We kept Kasab. We can keep him (Tahawwur Rana) too.” His statement referred to the high-profile case of Ajmal Kasab, the lone surviving gunman from the 26/11 terror attacks, who was held in Mumbai’s Arthur Road Jail before being executed in 2012.

The CM’s comments come amid discussions surrounding the security and logistics of handling such a high-profile detainee after his extradition to India. Tahawwur Rana, who faces charges related to planning the 2008 attacks, is expected to be a key figure in ongoing investigations into the terrorist plot.

Fadnavis’ statement underscores Maharashtra’s preparedness to handle sensitive cases of national security and its ability to manage high-risk prisoners, drawing from past experiences with Kasab. The remark also serves as a reminder of the state’s determination to bring justice to those responsible for the terror attacks that shook Mumbai.
