On the occasion of International Women’s Day, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that access to financial services has played a crucial role in helping women achieve real freedom and financial independence in India.
In a post on social media platform X, Sitharaman highlighted how government initiatives such as the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana and the Lakhpati Didi scheme are empowering women economically and transforming households and communities across the country.
Jan Dhan Accounts Strengthening Women’s Financial Independence
According to the official website of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, a total of 57.71 crore Jan Dhan accounts have been opened across India so far.
Sitharaman noted that over 28 crore of these accounts belong to women, significantly improving their access to banking and financial services.
She said that when women receive financial support, it leads to greater independence and empowerment. Access to banking services is helping women strengthen their economic position and expand financial inclusion across households in India.
Lakhpati Didi Scheme Supporting Rural Women
The Lakhpati Didi Scheme aims to economically empower women in rural areas by supporting those associated with Self-Help Groups (SHGs).
Under the scheme, women receive training, financial assistance, and other resources to build sustainable livelihoods. The initiative aims to enable women to earn ₹1 lakh or more annually, creating employment opportunities and promoting self-reliance among rural women.
