Marathi Made Mandatory in All Schools Across Maharashtra: Education Minister

Dadaji Bhuse informed the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly that Marathi has been made a compulsory subject in all schools across the state, regardless of the medium of instruction or the management board.

The minister said a government notification implementing the rule has already been issued and warned that strict action will be taken against schools that fail to comply.

Marathi Mandatory in All Boards and Mediums

Responding to a question raised by MLA Haroon Khan, Bhuse said that under the March 1, 2020 government notification, Marathi must be taught in all schools in the state.

The rule applies to:

  • Government schools
  • Private schools
  • Non-government institutions
  • Schools affiliated with international and national boards

According to the minister, even schools following international or national curricula must teach Marathi as a second or third language, and it cannot be removed under any circumstances.

Inspection Ordered After Complaint

Following a specific complaint raised by MLA Haroon Khan, the minister announced that the education department will immediately inspect the concerned school.

If it is found that Marathi is not being taught, the school management will be informed of the legal requirements and appropriate action will be taken.

Strict Action Against Rule Violations

Bhuse emphasized that since Marathi is the official language of Maharashtra, the government will ensure that the younger generation learns it.

Schools that violate the rule will first receive a warning, but continued non-compliance may lead to cancellation of the institution’s recognition.

Law Planned for Regulation of Private Pre-Primary Schools

Meanwhile, the minister also announced that the government is working on legislation to regulate private pre-primary schools and ensure quality early childhood education for children aged three to six years.

The proposed law will introduce mandatory portal registration, regulation, and quality assurance measures for private pre-primary institutions.

Pre-School Registration Portal Already Introduced

The issue of mandatory portal registration for private pre-primary schools was raised by MLA Manisha Chaudhary.

To create a centralised database for the state government, district administration, and parents, the government issued a circular on April 24, 2025, making registration on the Pre-School Registration Portal mandatory.

Schools are required to provide detailed information including:

  • Location and number of classrooms
  • Management details
  • Student enrollment numbers
  • Infrastructure and playground facilities
  • Sanitation and drinking water availability
  • CCTV installation
  • Staff details

The initiative aims to improve transparency, safety, and quality standards in pre-primary education across Maharashtra.
