Mumbai: In a landmark political shift in Maharashtra’s capital, Mumbai BJP chief Ameet Satam announced that a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) mayor will assume office in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) after a gap of 44 years. The development marks a significant moment in the city’s civic politics and signals a new phase in the administration of one of India’s most prominent municipal bodies.
Addressing the media, Satam said, “After 44 years, a BJP mayor is coming to power in BMC. The people of Mumbai have blessed Mahayuti to ensure the city’s development. The Mahayuti mayor and deputy mayor will be appointed today.” He described the occasion as historic for the party and the alliance, attributing the victory to the trust and support shown by Mumbaikars.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, considered one of the wealthiest civic bodies in Asia, plays a crucial role in managing the city’s infrastructure, sanitation, public health, roads, and other essential services. A change in leadership at the BMC is therefore seen as highly significant for the governance and future planning of Mumbai.
Satam emphasized that the mandate given to the Mahayuti alliance reflects the people’s desire for accelerated development and improved civic management. He stated that the new leadership would focus on strengthening urban infrastructure, addressing long-standing civic issues, and ensuring transparency in governance. Key priorities are expected to include road development, waste management reforms, flood mitigation measures, and modernization of public health facilities.
Political observers note that the return of a BJP mayor after more than four decades represents a notable shift in the city’s political landscape. The formal appointment of the mayor and deputy mayor is scheduled to take place later today, marking the beginning of a new administrative chapter for Mumbai.
