Major Infra Push: 170 Cr Rail Overbridge Planned at Mothagaon Crossing in Dombivli

Date:

Mumbai, April 30: In a significant push to resolve one of Dombivli’s most persistent traffic choke points, the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) has floated a ₹170 crore tender for the construction of a Rail Overbridge (ROB) at the Mothagaon railway crossing, located on the busy Retibunder Road stretch. The project is expected to bring major relief to daily commuters by improving east–west connectivity and drastically reducing traffic delays in the rapidly growing suburban region.

The Mothagaon level crossing has long been a severe congestion hotspot, where vehicular movement is frequently halted due to train crossings. This results in long traffic queues, fuel wastage, and delays lasting several minutes to even hours during peak rush periods, impacting thousands of commuters travelling between Dombivli, Thane, and adjoining areas every day. Officials said the proposed ROB will eliminate these disruptions by enabling uninterrupted, signal-free vehicular movement through a grade-separated structure.

A major upgrade in the project plan is the decision to expand the structure from a two-lane bridge to a four-lane Rail Overbridge, taking into account the region’s rapid urbanisation, increasing vehicle ownership, and future traffic growth projections. The redesign ensures that the infrastructure remains sustainable for the coming decades and prevents the risk of future congestion overload.

The project is being developed in coordination with Indian Railways and forms part of KDMC’s broader strategy to strengthen urban mobility and regional connectivity across the Kalyan-Dombivli-Thane corridor. Once completed, the ROB is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Dombivli and Thane from nearly one hour to around 25 minutes, offering a major boost to daily commuters and public transport efficiency.

With an estimated cost of ₹170 crore, the Mothagaon ROB is among the most important infrastructure investments in the region. Local residents and elected representatives have repeatedly demanded a wider and more efficient bridge at the site, citing growing population density, increased traffic pressure, and frequent bottlenecks at the railway crossing. The current tender marks a formal step toward addressing these long-standing civic concerns.

Beyond easing daily traffic, officials have highlighted that the project will also improve emergency vehicle movement, freight transportation efficiency, and connectivity to key industrial and residential zones, including routes leading toward the Mankoli flyover corridor and Thane city limits. The ROB is expected to integrate smoothly with surrounding road networks, helping decongest multiple junctions in Dombivli West and adjoining areas.

As per the project timeline, construction is expected to be completed within approximately 24 months from the commencement of work, subject to approvals and execution schedules. Once operational, the bridge is expected to deliver long-term traffic relief, improved road safety, and smoother mobility across the region, significantly reducing dependence on the congested railway crossing.

With the tender now officially floated, KDMC will proceed with the selection of contractors and initiation of construction work, marking a crucial milestone in transforming Dombivli’s transport infrastructure and addressing one of its most pressing urban mobility challenges.
