New Kasheli Creek Bridge Starts Operations, Eases Traffic on Mumbai–Nashik Route

Date:

Mumbai, April 30: Commuters on the Mumbai–Nashik highway finally have a reason to breathe easier as the new Kasheli Creek bridge, a key infrastructure link in Thane district, has officially been opened to traffic. The four-lane, 800-metre-long bridge is being seen as a partial but meaningful relief for thousands of daily travellers who struggle with long traffic snarls on this crucial corridor connecting Mumbai, Thane, Bhiwandi, and Nashik.

The newly operational bridge is part of the broader Mumbai–Nashik highway expansion project, which serves as a major transport artery for both passenger vehicles and heavy commercial traffic moving between North Maharashtra and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). It also acts as an important feeder route connecting to the Samruddhi Mahamarg expressway, further strengthening inter-state and intra-state connectivity.

However, officials have clarified that while the bridge will improve traffic movement at the Kasheli creek crossing, it does not yet resolve the larger congestion issues across the entire corridor. Key stretches such as Kharegaon, Pimplas, and adjoining highway sections are still under widening and construction work. Because of this, commuters are expected to continue facing delays until the full stretch between Majiwada and Amane is completed and upgraded into a multi-lane corridor.

Transport authorities have long identified the Kasheli stretch as a high-pressure congestion zone, where heavy movement of private vehicles, buses, and freight trucks frequently leads to kilometre-long traffic queues, especially during peak hours and weekends. Even minor lane restrictions or diversions on this route have historically caused major bottlenecks. The opening of the new bridge is expected to significantly ease this pressure by allowing smoother and more continuous traffic flow across the creek section.

The project is a part of a larger redevelopment plan aimed at converting the Mumbai–Nashik highway into a high-capacity, multi-lane expressway corridor. Once fully completed, the upgraded highway will not only improve connectivity between Mumbai and Nashik, but also enhance transport efficiency towards North India via the Samruddhi Expressway network leading to Nagpur.

Officials said that once all remaining sections of the highway are completed, the Kasheli bridge will function as a critical traffic distribution point, helping balance vehicle flow across the corridor. It is expected to carry a significant portion of both daily commuter traffic and heavy freight movement, reducing dependency on older and more congested stretches of the highway.

Despite the opening, experts and officials have cautioned that commuters may still experience intermittent congestion, as construction work continues on adjacent highway segments. The full benefits of the project will only become visible once all widening and integration works are completed in a phased manner across the corridor.

For now, the Kasheli Creek bridge stands as an important milestone in improving Mumbai–Nashik connectivity, offering a faster and more stable route for thousands of commuters every day. However, the larger transformation of the highway remains ongoing, with authorities continuing efforts to build a safer, faster, and more efficient transport corridor for long-term regional growth.
