India’s Coal Production Crosses 200 Million Tonnes Milestone in FY 2025–26

The Ministry of Coal announced on Friday that coal production from captive, commercial, and other coal mines has crossed the 200 million tonnes (MT) mark during the financial year 2025–26 as of March 11.

According to the ministry, captive and commercial coal mines produced 194.17 MT, while other mines contributed 6.06 MT, taking the total coal production beyond the historic 200 MT milestone.

Production Surpasses Previous Year’s Total Ahead of Schedule

The ministry highlighted that coal production in FY 2025–26 surpassed the total production of FY 2024–25 (197.32 MT) on March 7, 2026, achieving the milestone 24 days earlier than last year.

The sector has maintained strong momentum with a year-on-year growth of 10.56 percent during the same period.

Collective Efforts of Public and Private Sectors

In a statement, the ministry said the achievement reflects the combined efforts of central and state public sector undertakings (CPSUs and SPSUs) along with private sector participants.

Officials noted that the dedication and coordinated efforts of mining companies and workers have played a key role in strengthening India’s coal production capacity.

Coal Supply Also Registers Strong Growth

Coal supply has also witnessed a steady rise during the current financial year.

According to official data:

  • Coal supply increased from 182.98 MT to 197.09 MT
  • This represents a 7.71 percent year-on-year growth

The ministry said the increasing supply highlights the sector’s improved ability to meet the country’s growing energy demand.

Supporting India’s Energy Security

Officials emphasized that the growth in coal production and distribution is crucial for ensuring reliable energy supply to major consumer sectors, particularly the power and industrial sectors.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening captive and commercial coal mining, which has become a key driver of India’s energy ecosystem.

Record Coal Stock at Mines and Power Plants

The ministry also noted that domestic coal production and supply have exceeded consumption this year, leading to record-high coal stock levels at mines and thermal power plants.

Key Role in India’s Development Vision

Officials said the sector’s achievements demonstrate the impact of progressive policy reforms, technological innovations, and the dedication of the mining workforce.

Coal continues to play a vital role in ensuring energy security, supporting industrial growth, and advancing the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, as India moves toward becoming a developed nation by 2047.
