PM Modi and Canada PM Mark Carney Issue Joint Statement After Bilateral Talks, Announce Strategic Energy Partnership

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney issued a joint statement on Monday following high-level bilateral talks, marking what both leaders described as a renewed and forward-looking phase in India-Canada relations.

Prime Minister Carney stated that the level of engagement between the two governments over the past year had not been seen in more than two decades, calling it a partnership driven by renewed intent, clear focus, and long-term vision.

New Phase in India-Canada Bilateral Relations

Carney emphasized that India and Canada are two confident nations shaping their own future paths. He described the dialogue not merely as a reset of ties, but as a fresh effort to energize a valuable strategic partnership.

Praise for India’s Economic Growth Under PM Modi

Commending PM Modi’s leadership, Carney noted that India has emerged as one of the world’s fastest-growing major economies over the past decade. He highlighted the significant rise in India’s per capita income during this period.

Referring to India’s G20 Presidency theme in 2023 — “One Earth, One Family, One Future” — Carney stressed that global challenges require collective solutions and stronger international cooperation.

Strategic Energy Partnership and Clean Technology Focus

One of the key outcomes of the meeting was the announcement of a new strategic energy partnership between the two nations. Carney said both countries would work to expand energy trade and deepen cooperation in clean energy sectors such as wind, solar, and hydrogen.

He revealed that Canada plans to double its power grid capacity by 2050 and sees India as an important partner in achieving that goal.

Appreciation for India’s Digital Payment Ecosystem

The Canadian Prime Minister praised India’s digital public infrastructure, particularly the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), highlighting its role in improving transparency and efficiency in income support and direct benefit transfer schemes.

He indicated that Canada is interested in learning from India’s digital innovation model and exploring areas of collaboration.

Shared Vision for the Future

Quoting Swami Vivekananda’s message — “Arise, awake, and stop not till the goal is reached” — Carney said both nations are committed to working together toward shared aspirations, including India’s ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’ vision and Canada’s ‘Canada Strong’ agenda.

Uranium Supply Agreement Exchange

During the meeting, documents related to the supply of uranium ore concentrate were exchanged between Cameco and India’s Department of Atomic Energy.

The exchange ceremony was attended by Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe, Cameco President Tim Gitzel, and India’s High Commissioner to Canada, Dinesh Patnaik.

The bilateral discussions underscore a renewed momentum in India-Canada ties, focusing on economic growth, clean energy collaboration, digital innovation, and strategic cooperation for long-term mutual benefit.
