PM Modi Inaugurates Micron Semiconductor ATMP Facility in Sanand, Boosts India’s Chip Manufacturing Ambitions

Sanand, Gujarat: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Semiconductor Assembly, Test and Packaging (ATMP) facility of Micron Technology India Private Limited in Sanand, marking a major milestone in India’s semiconductor manufacturing journey.

Addressing a public gathering, PM Modi said the 21st century belongs to the AI revolution and semiconductors are the key bridge powering this transformation.

“Microchips Are the Regulator of the 21st Century”

Highlighting the importance of semiconductor technology, the Prime Minister said, “Until the 20th century, the world witnessed the Industrial Revolution where factories, machines, and mass production drove progress. But the 21st century is the century of AI revolution, and semiconductors are the biggest enabler of this change.”

He added, “If oil was the regulator of the previous century, microchips will be the regulator of this century. With this vision, India decided to move rapidly in the semiconductor sector.”

PM Modi recalled that India announced the Semiconductor Mission during the challenging COVID-19 period, laying a strong foundation with foresight despite global uncertainties.

India Expanding from Software to Hardware Leadership

The Prime Minister said that a decade ago, discussions in India were largely limited to IT services, but today the country is strengthening its identity in hardware manufacturing as well.

“India, known globally for software, is now emerging strongly in hardware. In Sanand, we are witnessing the dawn of a new technological future. India is rapidly becoming an integral part of the global semiconductor value chain,” he said.

Referring to India’s recent global AI initiatives, he noted that after hosting one of the world’s largest and most successful AI summits, the inauguration of the semiconductor plant further demonstrates India’s commitment to technology leadership.

Commercial Production of Made-in-India Memory Modules Begins

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said production at the plant has officially begun. “From foundation to production in 900 days — this is possible because of strong leadership. Memory chips will be manufactured at this plant. Semiconductors are fundamental to every modern technology,” he said.

The Sanand ATMP facility has started commercial production and shipment of the first Made-in-India semiconductor memory modules, significantly strengthening India’s position in the global semiconductor ecosystem.

₹22,500 Crore Investment Under India Semiconductor Mission

The project foundation stone was laid in September 2023 and was the first proposal approved under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM). With a total investment exceeding ₹22,500 crore, construction began immediately after approval, showcasing the government’s commitment to accelerating strategic semiconductor investments.

Strengthening India’s Global Tech Footprint

Before the inauguration, PM Modi held a public roadshow in Sanand, where large crowds gathered to welcome him.

The Sanand facility is expected to play a crucial role in meeting the rising demand for semiconductors driven by AI, high-performance computing, and advanced digital infrastructure. The development marks a transformative step toward positioning India as a reliable and competitive semiconductor manufacturing hub globally.
