Metro 9 Leads as Mumbai’s New Corridor Clock 27,000 Daily Riders in Debut Week

Date:

Mumbai’s newly operational Metro corridors—Line 9 and Line 2B—have recorded a combined average ridership of over 27,000 passengers per day in their very first week, indicating a promising start despite the ongoing summer lull.

According to official data from April 8 to April 14, the two lines together saw steady commuter footfall even though this period typically witnesses reduced travel due to school vacations and fewer office commuters.

Line 9 leads ridership surge

Metro Line 9, which connects Kashigaon in Mira-Bhayandar to Dahisar and is now integrated with Line 7 up to Gundavli, emerged as the stronger performer. The corridor recorded an average daily ridership of around 23,097 passengers, significantly contributing to the overall numbers.

The seamless connectivity offered by this extended route has improved access across the western suburbs, making it a preferred choice for daily commuters.

Line 2B in early growth phase

In comparison, Metro Line 2B—linking Mandale in Mankhurd to Diamond Garden in Chembur—registered a daily average of 3,992 passengers during the same period.

Officials noted that the corridor is still in its initial phase and is expected to gain momentum as connectivity improves and more commuters begin shifting from road-based transport.

Ridership expected to rise

Authorities remain optimistic about a surge in passenger numbers in the coming weeks, especially with the reopening of schools and offices. The current figures are seen as encouraging, given the seasonal dip in travel demand.

The launch of these new corridors marks another step in Mumbai’s expanding metro network, aimed at reducing road congestion and offering faster, more efficient urban mobility options.
