MCZMA Flags Risk of Encroachment on Charkop Land, Urges State to Take Immediate Action

Date:

Mumbai: The Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA) has raised concerns over the potential encroachment of a large parcel of government land in Charkop, Kandivli West, and has urged state authorities and civic bodies to take immediate preventive action.

According to reports, the land—spanning over 116 acres of embargoed government industrial property—is at risk of illegal occupation. The issue came to light following a complaint by an environmental activist, prompting the authority to intervene.

Complaint Triggers Action

The complaint alleged that the land, which is protected and cannot be sold or leased without approval from the suburban district collector, is being targeted for encroachment. It also pointed out that a private contractor had placed banners on the plot, raising concerns about possible unauthorised activity.

Taking cognisance of the issue, the MCZMA formally communicated with the state revenue department and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), asking them to ensure that no encroachment takes place on the land.

Call for Legal Action

The authority has also indicated that strict legal measures may be required, including the possibility of filing a First Information Report (FIR) against those involved in illegal encroachment activities. The complainant has also demanded similar action based on the evidence submitted to authorities.

Importance of the Land

The Charkop land parcel is classified as government industrial land under restrictions, making it a sensitive asset. Any unauthorised occupation or misuse could not only violate legal provisions but also impact planned development and environmental regulations in the coastal zone.

Bigger Picture

The development highlights ongoing challenges in protecting public land in urban areas like Mumbai, where high land value often leads to attempts at encroachment. Authorities are now under pressure to act swiftly to safeguard the land and prevent any illegal occupation.

The MCZMA’s intervention underscores the importance of strict monitoring, timely enforcement, and coordination between agencies to protect government land and ensure compliance with environmental and zoning regulations.
