India and Bhutan Sign Multiple MoUs, Including Establishment of Rail Links

Date:

In a significant move towards strengthening bilateral ties, India and Bhutan have signed several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs), including the establishment of rail links between the two nations.

The MoUs were exchanged in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bhutanese counterpart Tshering Tobgay during the ongoing two-day State visit of Modi. The Indian Prime Minister expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Tobgay for the exceptional public welcome accorded to him, with people greeting him all along the journey from Paro to Thimphu.

The MoU provides for the establishment of two proposed rail links between India and Bhutan, including the Kokrajhar-Gelephu rail link and Banarhat-Samtse rail link and their implementation modalities. This strategic move is expected to boost connectivity and foster economic growth in both nations.

In addition to the rail links, the two countries also signed agreements in the fields of energy, trade, digital connectivity, space, and agriculture. These agreements are aimed at enhancing cooperation in sectors such as renewable energy, agriculture, youth exchange, environment and forestry, and tourism.

India and Bhutan enjoy long-standing and exceptional ties characterized by utmost trust, goodwill, and mutual understanding at all levels. The signing of these MoUs marks a significant milestone in the deepening of these ties and paves the way for a brighter future for both nations.

Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Bhutan and the signing of these MoUs underscore the importance India places on its relationship with Bhutan, a close and trusted ally in the region. As the two nations continue to work together, the establishment of these rail links and other agreements are expected to bring about a new era of prosperity and growth.
