Mumbai: CM Devendra Fadnavis Condemns Language-Based Violence, Urges Harmony

Date:

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday issued a strong statement condemning recent incidents of violence based on linguistic identity. Addressing the media, Fadnavis reaffirmed pride in the Marathi language but cautioned that any form of hooliganism or assault in the name of language will not be tolerated.

“It is not wrong to be proud of the Marathi language in Maharashtra. But if someone indulges in hooliganism due to language, we will not tolerate it,” said the Chief Minister. He confirmed that the police had filed an FIR and initiated action in a recent case where individuals were allegedly assaulted over linguistic differences.

Fadnavis emphasized that while Marathi pride is natural and respected, all Indian languages deserve dignity and equal treatment. “Injustice cannot be done to any language of India. We have to keep this in mind,” he added.

Criticizing the hypocrisy in selective language bias, he remarked, “Sometimes I am surprised that these people embrace English and create disputes over Hindi. What kind of thinking is this?”

The Chief Minister reiterated that strict legal action will be taken against anyone attempting to disturb social harmony by using language as a tool of provocation.

The remarks come amid rising concerns over growing regionalism and linguistic intolerance in urban areas, particularly in multilingual hubs like Mumbai. Fadnavis’ response aims to send a clear message of unity and uphold the spirit of the Indian Constitution, which recognizes 22 official languages.
