Eknath Shinde Ready to Accept Power-Sharing with BJP in BMC

Mumbai | January 19, 2026

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has confirmed that there will be no dispute over posts in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), and both the BJP and Shiv Sena will jointly form the government, respecting the mandate given by the people of Mumbai.

After previously demanding equal power-sharing in the BMC, including the post of Mumbai Mayor and chairmanship of key committees, Shinde acknowledged that there were no differences between the BJP and Shiv Sena regarding positions. He clarified that, despite initial tensions, the two parties would work together to form a government.

Shinde emphasized that both the BJP and Shiv Sena had contested the 227-member BMC elections together, and would therefore form the government together, rather than Shiv Sena alone. The BJP won 89 seats, while Shiv Sena (led by Shinde) secured 29 seats, bringing the total Mahayuti alliance tally to 118 seats, enabling them to form the government despite BJP’s failure to secure an outright majority.

While Shinde had previously moved his newly elected corporators to a hotel for a “workshop” following the elections, he now stressed that the BJP and Shiv Sena would work in close coordination to elect the next mayor once Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis returns from Davos.

Shinde concluded by reinforcing that the alliance was not about power-sharing or bargaining, but about delivering development for the citizens of Mumbai.
