In a major boost to public healthcare infrastructure, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has inaugurated Maharashtra’s largest dialysis centre in Vashi, significantly expanding access to life-saving kidney treatment for economically weaker patients.
The newly launched facility houses 50 dialysis beds under one roof and is located inside the Vivekananda Cultural Center building in Vashi Sector 14. Importantly, the service is being provided completely free of cost, offering major financial relief to patients requiring long-term dialysis treatment.
Free Dialysis Facility Aims to Ease Financial Burden
Dialysis treatment is often prohibitively expensive for patients suffering from chronic kidney disease, especially those requiring sessions multiple times every week.
Officials noted that:
- A single dialysis session typically costs between ₹3,000 and ₹3,500
- Many patients require dialysis 2–3 times per week
- Long-term treatment can place severe pressure on low-income families
By offering treatment free of charge, the new centre is expected to become a critical support system for patients unable to afford private healthcare.
Part of Larger Expansion of Dialysis Infrastructure
With the addition of the new Vashi facility, NMMC now operates a total of 85 dialysis beds across Navi Mumbai through multiple public healthcare centres:
- 50 beds at the new Vashi special dialysis centre
- 10 beds at Vashi Public Hospital
- 11 beds at Nerul Hospital
- 11 beds at Airoli Hospital
- 3 beds at the CBD Belapur facility
Municipal Commissioner Kailas Shinde said the expansion reflects the rising demand for dialysis services, especially due to increasing cases of:
- Diabetes
- High blood pressure
- Kidney-related complications
Public Awareness Campaign Planned
NMMC officials have also directed authorities to spread awareness about the availability of the new facility so that more eligible patients can benefit from the services.
According to reports, more than 1,000 patients have already benefited from the dialysis services since operations began earlier this year.
Why This Centre Matters Beyond Navi Mumbai
1. Rising Kidney Disease Burden in India
India has seen a steady increase in chronic kidney disease cases, largely linked to:
- Diabetes
- Hypertension
- Lifestyle-related illnesses
Yet dialysis remains inaccessible for many due to high recurring costs.
2. Public Healthcare Gap
Most dialysis services in India are concentrated in private hospitals, creating affordability challenges. Large-scale public dialysis centres can reduce:
- Out-of-pocket healthcare expenditure
- Treatment discontinuation among poor patients
3. Urban Healthcare Infrastructure Model
The Vashi facility demonstrates how urban local bodies can directly strengthen specialised healthcare infrastructure rather than relying solely on tertiary hospitals.
4. Demand Likely to Increase Further
As life expectancy rises and non-communicable diseases increase, demand for dialysis services is expected to grow sharply across urban India.
Healthcare Expansion in Navi Mumbai
The dialysis centre is also part of a broader healthcare expansion drive by NMMC.
Officials said work is underway to introduce additional advanced medical services at civic hospitals, including:
- MRI facilities
- Cath labs
- Central sterilisation units
- Modern mortuary infrastructure
This reflects Navi Mumbai’s continuing push toward strengthening municipal healthcare capabilities.
Affordable Healthcare
The launch of Maharashtra’s largest free dialysis centre in Vashi marks a significant step toward improving affordable healthcare access for kidney patients. By combining scale, free treatment, and municipal healthcare expansion, the initiative could become a model for other urban local bodies looking to strengthen specialised public health services.
